Wafting Whiffs

By John Falk

Wafting Whiffs
Of all the whiffs you can waft, what are your favorites...the ones that lift your olfactories to heavenly heights? Come on now, you must have some. Think about it for a few moments, then luxuriate in the memories of those especially meaningful aromas.
At first thought, I didn't believe my list of favorite smells could be counted on more than a couple of fingers. Boy, was I wrong. For example, the first memorable sniff that came to mind was that curiously interesting odor of "wet dog." As a lifelong fancier of the canine species, it seemed a natural response. Yet, it immediately produced another combination of associated aromas--moist earth, damp field grass and, ultimately, the acrid scent of gun smoke. This last led inexorably to the faintly musty essence of still warm feathers clutched in hand.
What such an aromatic panoply encompassed was simply a few moments typical of an autumn woodcock hunt. How wonderfully illustrative of the potent power of a compilation of smells to bring a pleasant episode back to life.
Further encouraged to identify additional whiffs of pleasure, I pulled together a list that even a professional sniffer could be proud of:
The soothingly promising fragrance of fresh brewing coffee in the early morning.
The mouth-watering piquancy of just baked chocolate chip cookies.
The tantalizing spiciness of almost done homemade chili.
The satisfying tang of your antiperspirant applied after a warm shower.
The exciting scent of a beautiful woman's perfume titillating your senses after dark.
The deep woods incense of potent pine scent comforting the nostrils.
The pungent odor of wood smoke when you're sure it's not your house burning.
Try putting a list of your own special smells together for what may turn out to be a highly interesting and rewarding experience.

I love the smell of new mown hay, the odor of manure being spread on the freshly plowed fields, piles of brush being burned in the spring and the smell of maple syrup being boiled in the sugar house. The smells of country life and my youth.
Thanks for the memories, John.
Best wishes.
Frederick

Hi Frederick:
Funny, I was thinking again about my favorite scents, and new mown hay popped into mind. Any of those good old country smells can always be included among my favorites, too!
John

Those are all great smells! How about walking outside after a rain, onions being stirfried, that sweetly pungent smell of rotting leaves in the fall, the smell of a newborn babe.

Hi:
Right on! Those onions smell tempting, but I just can't use 'em anymore...advancing wisdom setting in.
