Doing what you really want to do during retirement.

By John Falk

Doing What You Really Want
Ah, retirement! A word that brings a sense of impending joy, a sensation of relief from the daily grind of making a living. No matter what your occupation or profession, no matter the amount of passion you may have brought to it, contemplating the absolute freedom of routineless days can create untold euphoria.

No more rising at 6 a.m. to chug down a few gulps of hastily prepared coffee along with a soggy doughnut. And then dashing to catch the early morning commuter train in to a bustling, stress-producing, energy-sapping metropolis. Just drowning out the very noise of it, and being able to roll over in bed for a longer snooze brings untold elation to mind.

So, with all that daydreaming now behind you, suddenly it's finally here...retirement. Once its full realization sets in, your main concern becomes meaningfully filling your time. That should present little problem, right? Your new found freedom opens the door to doing what you really want to do with each day. Casting a fly in your favorite trout stream can provide long dreamed of satisfaction, weather and open season permitting. Same would be true of a week end jaunt chasing after ruffed grouse in colorful Autumn woodland covers. Then, too, how about those afternoon ball games, watching your team blow away the competition?

As the first few weeks fly by, filled with enjoying those best-loved pleasures, life seems the greatest. But--and there's always a but--soon, something is changing, there's a waning to those joyful experiences. No longer do they embody their previous richness, their fullness. Some of the air has gone out of the balloon. Why? Easy. What's missing is being able to look forward to doing the things you really want to do while having to wait for the opportunities. Anticipation probably comprises about 50 per cent of the delight derived from them.

Now, the only real compensation must--as it will--come from regaining a sense of regular employment. That doesn't necessarily mean returning to your former occupation, though it could be something related to it. But, finding a niche, perhaps starting an internet business, that offers opportunity for regularity each day. With that you'll discover that we really do need routine in our lives. If you choose well, the true meaning of retirement will bring with it all the joys of accomplishment while still enabling you to do the things you really want to do.
